I saw my first monarch of 1998 yesterday nectaring on an unidentified yellow wildflower beside the road as I was going to lunch. I was in traffic and by the time I got to where I could turn around it was moving across a baseball field. I wasn't able to identify the sex, but it did look faded and
tattered. Our native milkweed isn't up yet, but I have a couple of A. curassavica out and waiting. At this point I'd like to put in a plug for a gardening product called Wall-of-Water. It is a circular set of connected tubes of plastic film you can fill with water and put around your plants. The water heats up during the day and keeps the plants warm at night. A couple of weeks ago
when we had the last cold front come through, I had already set out the A.curassavica and the temperature got down to 24oF for two nights. All my plants came through without losing a leaf.
