All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 03/30/1998

Number: 1

We had a huge rain and wind storm on March 30. The storm front seemed to push a varied number of bird species ahead of it. We now have sighted our phoebes who are almost a month early returning to our farm. Also, along the Trent River, we have seen the osprey return to its nesting platform today. There are many grackles in the yards. We also think we heard an oriole on Saturday, March 29 but the bird was silhouetted in a tree and we couldn't get a proper view of its colours. The mosquitoes and flies are everywhere outside, so there is plenty of food for the insectivores to munch on. The maple syrup season seems to be over in this part of Ontario. We pulled our spiles and buckets yesterday. This season, we produced just over 8 gallons of syrup (about 37 litres).
