Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/21/1998

Number: 1

What we actually saw was a Monarch caterpillar. In fact we had three on Friday April 24, 1998, but by Monday April 27, there were only two left at 10:30am, and by 11:30am there was only a single fellow remaining. So, we took pity on him as he was being sized up as an early lunch by two hungry birds of undetermined origin, and we brought him into the classroom. He is now happily hanging around in a chamber designed for just such a traveler, and is busy becoming a beautiful Monarch butterfly. Our milkweed plants from last fall have bushed out and are flowering generously, so we should have many more visitors before school is out. And every one of my students is growing a milkweed plant to take home to their own yards for the summer.
