All Other Signs of Spring

Our lilacs are ready to bloom! This is very early. Which made the us think of another sign of the late spring/early summer - shad flies. We tried to research them on the web and in encyclopedias with no luck. Shad flies hatch on the St. Lawrence River in 30-40 mile stretch every late spring. In "bad" years, the hatchings appear to be big, brown clouds which rise out ot he river and then disperse. Some years you can't see across the street for the swarming moth like bugs. Usually the hatchings take place from Memorial Day to the 2nd week in June. But with the lilacs blooming so early, we're wondering if the shads will be early as well. We will let you when the first is seen.
