Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/02/1998

Number: 1

After receiving our symbolic paper monarchs last week, we were anxiously awaiting the arrival of a live specimen. One small monarch was observed in a grassy area!
What is meant by "small"? We have reared monarchs in the classroom for a number of years. In late summer and fall we go "caterpillar picking." The last of our larva tend to spin their chrysalis before they are seemingly full-sized. These larva are getting the last of
the existing milkweed leaves. The adults that emerge are small. This was the general size of last Saturday's sighting.
