Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/15/1998

Number: 1

John Littleton sighted 2nd monarch of year on May 15 in Bakersville, NC. It hung around his yard until he exposed some milkweed seedlings that were concealed under a multiflora rosebush, upon which she promptly layed something like 21 eggs. He described this monarch as "ghostly-looking," much paler than the one he saw in April 7th near Spruce Pine, NC.
Monarchs have been notable for their absence here in the North
Carolina Blue Ridge this spring. I have yet to see my first--quite a
contrast to last year, when I saw several in mid-April and early May
(and had lots of reports from friends who had seen them too). The only
person I know who has seen any is John Littleton and he's seen two as of 5/15/98.
