I observed a total of six Monarchs at different times on Saturday and Sunday May 16 and 17 in Des Moines Iowa. These represent the first and only Monarchs seen by me this year.
These sightings followed two days of strong hot and humid winds from the south that eventually produced an outbreak of very bad storms and a several tornados on Friday May 15. The Monarchs were all travelling north at low level.
The milkweed in central Iowa, in sunny places, is two feet high but I have not had a chance to look for eggs.
