This past weekend really got off to a great start! ONE Monarch was observed *in* Elliot Lake on Friday, May 29, 4:15 p.m. - in my backyard to be specific. Finally, butterfly watching as it should be - glass in one hand, popcorn in the other - observing the effects of a *very* brisk WNW wind (gusts up to 52 km/hr) shred the leaves off some of my maples. What a surprise to see an obviously strong and brightly coloured Monarch flying the milkweed route around my property. It did not land, however.
