Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/08/1998

Number: 1

I saw my first monarch butterfly of the season this Monday (06/08/98 @
9:00am). The monarch was flying from a rather shaded patch of mixed
grasses and forbs, containing blooming ox-eye daisy, hawkweed, and
dame's rocket. It flew towards a virtual monoculture of reed canary
grass, fringed by a few milkweeds. As I'm sure you've gathered by
now, the area that the butterfly was in is quite disturbed. The
insect's wings appeared to be in good condition.

The monarch was sighted on Pennsylvania State Gamelands adjacent to
the Seneca Division of Erie National Wildlife Refuge, near the town of
Cambridge Springs.
