The first Monarch I observed this spring in Ames, Iowa was observed on May
16, 1998 at 12:29 p.m., Central Standard (not daylight) Time. Its flight
heading was 339 degrees (geographic direction), flying ca. 0.8 m above the
ground in a large open grassy field. The wind was blowing from
northwesterly directions from 298-315 degrees true azimuth, steady at 5-7
mph and gusting to 10-16 mph. Temperature at 1.1 m was 81 degrees F.
Conditions were sunny.
