Signs of Fall

Date: 08/12/1998

Number: 1

Flocks of Cedar Waxwings are starting to move along the shore of Lake Superior. Flocks can number anywhere from 5 to 200. Big flocks are hard to count because the birds change position within the flock, giving a swirling effect, but they move slowly enough that with practice we can get a fairly accurate count even when the flocks are more than 200. Waxwings eat a huge variety of berries and fruits, and also flying insects which they snatch on the wing. This time of summer, berries are becoming abundant. Along the shore, at places where blueberries flourish, the waxwings share them with other birds and mammals including humans, chipmunks and bears.
