Signs of Fall

Date: 08/24/1998

Number: 1

Nighthawks are on the move! I've been watching streams of them fluttering overhead near Lake Superior for the past week, and internet bird chats are mentioning flocks of dozens and even hundreds in many places all over the northern and central states. They do most of their flying in early morning and late afternoon through dusk. They catch insects in their huge mouths as they go. This insect food will be fueling their LONG journey south--many of them are going all the way to Brazil.
