Signs of Fall

Date: 09/01/1998

Number: 1

We have been feeding the Hummingbirds in our backyard for the past two years. They appear to be more comfortable with our presence now than last year. We have even had some finish feeding and come over and hover behind one of us about three feet away.

It is amazing to watch their dexterity. We have seen them out manuever and attack bees and hornets which attempt to feed at "their" feeder. We have not seen the Ruby throated hummingbirds this year at our feeder. But we have some friends with a cabin near Fergus Falls, Minnesota, where we have seen them feed in years past. We haven't been up there much this year but hear they are still around.

Our question: At our latitude when should we stop feeding the hummingbirds to not interfere with their natural migration south for the winter? We still have daytime temperatures in the mid 80's and lows in the upper 50's and 60's, and the native plants in our yard are still in bloom. We have a hibiscus with many blooms just below
