Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/09/1998

Number: 1

Since early August, we have noticed more Monarchs in the area.

On Wed, Sept 2, I went out looking to take a photographs of Monarchs but whenever I got close enough to take the shot, another Monarch would appear and dive at the first one. They would the both go spiralling off. One indvidual Monarch chased off at least three others while I observed. This Monarch was distinctive because it appeared to be missing all or part of a hindwing.

On Friday, Sept 4, a small group of maybe 40 roosting Monarchs was noticed in a poplar tree along the park road.

Saturday Sept. 5, I saw my first Monarch caterpillar of the season, despite having looked for them all summer. It was hanging on a grass stem just above a milkweed plant.
