In the spring, we planted a bird and butterfly haven on 5 1/2 acres. One part is within the backyard which has a wrought iron fence and contains over 2,800 square feet of beds. The back of the property has been left wild with trees and a small stream.
The beds in the backyard are planted with bushes, perennials and small trees. There was an existing cottonwood tree as well as a huge crepe myrtle. The grass is native Little Bluestem. We selected plants that would provide food (berries and nectar), shelter as well as future nesting sites. Many feeders (suet, seed, and nectar) as well as birdhouses were placed within the haven. Two traditional bird baths plus a ground bath with a dripper were also located within the haven. The project is shown on the WWW at:

Our Brownie troop is helping plant some fall perennials as well as watch for the migration in the fall and spring.
