In our school parking lot, at 4:30 PM, I observed 9 monarch butterflies resting. The weather was pleasant, 75 degrees, sunny, a slight breeze. We had just had 4 days of hot, sticky weather, so I guess this small batch was travelling on the front that had just moved through.
On another note--my science enrichment classes have released 17 monarchs this fall, 8 females and 9 males! There are still 2 chrysalis cases developing. One came out with a deformed wing, which we are taking care of in the classroom and will name next week. I have noticed that there are many more monarchs in my area this year than last year, contrary to what some of you are saying. Perhaps this is because we had a pretty bad drought last year, and this year has been wonderful.
