Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/20/1998

Number: 1

We heard a report on the local news that the town of Churdan, Iowa has had thousands of monarchs in its fields this past weekend. Churdan is located in western Iowa, in Greene County. There are many farms there.

Our class has been watching the number of monarchs that have been visiting Weber Elementary School's prairie. The weather as of Sunday was still quite warm, in the 80's. We are surprised that there are so few monarchs here. On Sunday, only 5 were seen around the area. Students who live around the school are not seeing too many either, and there are many farm fields and open areas with wild flowers or paririe grasses.
