On Tuesday 09/15/98 there were 4 Monarchs feeding on my Mexican sunflowers. On 09/19, 09/17, and 09/18 I saw one Monarch feeding on the Mexican sunflowers. I have seen no Monarchs from 09/19 to 09/22.
From 09/15 to 09/21, the day time temperatures were from mid 60s to mid 80s. There was no precipitation. On 09/22 it is raining and in the mid 60s.
The Monarchs fed exclusively on the Mexican sunflowers. Other choices (visited by other butterflies, honey bees, and carpenter bees in my gardens are peppermint, zinnias, cleome, peppers.)
On Tuesday, one Monarch had a small piece missing from the bottom of his wing, near his body. The missing piece was the size of the nail on my little finger. The missing piece did not seem to effect the Monarch.
Next year I can give more specific times and weather conditions. At what time should I expect Monarchs to migrate North through Connecticut (hummingbirds arrive in early May).
