Beginning on Sept 3-21 we have been hatching butterflies. We have hatched and released 12 Monarch butterflies so they can continue their migration south. Each has had a name and a ceremony for its release. The larva came from our butterfly garden. They were in many different stages of development. We fed them milkweed leaves. Each ate about one a day. We marked the pupa in the cage with stickers so we would know when to expect our new friend.Each student had to teach the sequence to their parents. At Open House the parents had to take a "TEST" to see if their student was a good teacher. All passed with flying "Butterflies"...We hatched 4 girls and 8 boys into the beautiful skies of Illinois. They all flew South!!!!!It is amazing that they know just where to go. They love the purple coneflowers, butterfly bush, marigolds, petunias, mums,coriopsis, and other flowers we planted for their dining pleasure. We see them daily as we go into our butterfly garden.
