Our third graders have been watching the monarchs for the past week in our school habitat areas. Approximately 20-30 butterflies arrived for the week, September 14-21 feeding on the tithonia-Mexican sunflowers, Giant sunflowers, New England asters, and goldenrod. We were excited to see them come, because we too had been concerned with not seeing many this year. The temperature stayed in the mid 70s all week during the day, but Monday, Sept. 21 it turned 10 degrees colder and today we have not seen one. We think they have all left to escape the cold.
