Two fifth grade classes from Clark Elementary, assorted parents and siblings and about 22 elementary art methods students from Wichita State University attended a "Monarch Migration" workshop held at Botanica, The Wichita Gardens. This was an excellent field trip. The Botanica volunteers demonstrated the procedure for tagging monarchs. We split into two groups to visit the butterfly garden and the Butterfly House, where we witnessed all the different stages in the life cycle of the butterfly. Tropical milkweed and lantana are planted just outside the Butterfly House and were covered with monarchs. There were too many to count--75-100? Then we went inside, experienced a simulation of butterflies going from the New England states to Mexico which was designed very kinesthetically. We then watched a short video, which showed the monarchs covering the trees in Mexico like leaves. Botanica had provided a total learning experience. We are ready to go back and paint monarchs in art on
