Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/26/1998

Number: 1

Saturday September 19th after a several days of partly cloudy and windy wather we settled into a high pressure zone. Tempratures rose to the low 80's and we had a 6 mph South South West winds.By sunrise Monarchs had arrived at my butterfly garden. They nectared all day on 18 buddleia david bushes I have. My best count was 7 at one time. They seemed to stay all day and fed voraciously on the flowers. I also have New England Asters and Goldenrods in full bloom but they were only interested in the buddleia (Butterfly Bush). I noticed that the Monarchs prefer to nectar at the highest points of the Butterfly bushes which are between seven and eight feet high. However they eventually will go to all levels of the bushes to nectar especially if the high spots are occupied by fellow Monarchs and other butterflies. The unusually warm weather also has brought large numbers of Amercian Painted Ladies and has caused the emergence of some very fresh Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Spicebush Butterflie
