Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/30/1998

Number: 1

Today we reased another 6 tagged monarchs. Four were males and two were females. It was quite warm--85 degrees. All but 1 monarch took off for the trees in front of our school. One male was quite content to rest and feed on the lobelia and snapdragons around our school sign. A cold front is coming through tomorrow so we hope they head directly south. We still have two slow-pokes in chrysalis. About one half of the caterpillars we collected this year died in chrysalis. Some had parasitic larva drop to the bottom of the aquarium. Others just became very dark and never imerged. Somehow the 20+ that survived were every bit as miraculous to the third grades as the 260+ last years class raised. We'll be sure to let you know how our two stragglers make out. Mrs. Ferguson and the third graders at McKnight Elementary School, Pittsburgh, PA
