The fifth grade students at L.R.Appleman Elementary School have sighted a number of monarch butterflies. Two students have reported seeing flocks of 50 or more in their neighborhoods and fields. Most of the 75 students who are helping to sight have seen just a few at a time. I personally have only seen one in the last few days. Three weeks ago I set out to find caterpillars on the local milkweed specimans for my daughter's first grade class to observe (as well as my students). After a two hour search, I gave up. I haven't heard of anyone finding any. We have had a very dry summer with rainfall amounts being less than half of normal. I wonder if that's why.
