Vera Kilpatrick Elementary School in Texarkana, AR, has added
an outdoor classroom to our campus since the end of school last
May. Our classroom was designed to attract butterflies and birds. One end is planted with trees to represent a woodland area - there is then a 270 gallon pond (the water circulates through an old fashioned field pump) - from the water area you move into an area planted with flowers that attract butterflies - we even have a patch of milkweed. The garden ends with an herb patch. We tried to use as many plants as we could that are native to our area. It is an ongoing project - we are adding a seating area made of split cypress logs from a nearby sawmill - and we will continue to add new plants and replace others as they fade and die.
