Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/06/1998

Number: 1

We are very much aware of the recent weather change due to the
strong front. Temperatures dropped, rain fell, and we are seeing more
Monarchs. Students are reporting Monarchs on trees in their yards
when the wind was blowing hard. Individual Monarchs look bright and
colorful; none have been spotted with tattered wings.
In the past few weeks, we had only seen
a few on the playground at school. Now there are more, but not dramatic
numbers as reported elsewhere to the north.

Our classroom Monarch population is doing very well. We are keeping them
well fed on our invented butterfly nectar. We had been feeding them a
mixture we got from the University of Kansas, but when that ran out, we
made a similar mixture. No complaints from the diners so farMating is
happening in the cage, but we haven't seen egg laying yet. We will be
releasing our small group sometime in the next few days to coincide with
our paper Monarchs heading down to Mexico.
