Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/12/1998

Number: 1

The monarchs have finally reached our area in a fairly large number. We are on the edge of one of the migration routes and do not get huge numbers of monarchs - but they are finally here after last week's cold front. We observed over 200 flying in and above a field of goldenrod and asters. We were able to catch, tag and release several for the Monarch Watch program.

We had found a chrysalis on ragweed week before last and were able to observe it emerge as a beautiful new female - tag her - and release her in our outdoor classroom last Friday.

On Thursday, October 8, we were tagging monarchs (we were only able to catch 5 - one per science group) and the Lieutentan
Governor of Arkansas came in. He told the students that he is the Vice Chairman of the Logan County - Paris, AR Butterfly Festival. He also told them that they were doing something very important and should feel very proud because butterflies are very important pollinators.
