Signs of Fall

Date: 10/19/1998

Number: 1

The first hard frost has hit along the shores of the Resevoir where I live. My pumpkins lie amidst blackened leaves, bulging up dressed in marbled oranges and greens. Morning fog blankets the water, and the muffled sounds of congregating geese and a myriad of ducks is everywhere as I drink coffee on the porch wrapped in a thick robe. As the sun breaks through, the huckleberries and Oregon grape are ablaze with their reds, and the aspen radiate their yellows. Come evening the elk will bugle on the opposite mountainside, and I see that the local, mischieveious bear cub has left its scat on my lawn. It has never been sighted with a sow, but has frequented garages and gardens of my neighbors and me. Trumpeter swans will gather soon to stay for about 2 weeks. The world is alive with the momentum of the changing season.
