Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/18/1998

Number: 1

It had been a couple of weeks since I'd spotted a monarch in flight here in the southern part of New York State (the lower Hudson Valley), but on Sunday, 10/18, my daughter and I were participating in a Crop Walk to raise money for soup kitchens. It was a beautifully sunny, unseasonably warm early afternoon, and as the 6 mile walk began, we saw one and then shortly thereafter another monarch flying along with us! It gave me hope because in my second grade classroom we still have 5 chrysalises ( we fed them milkweed as soon as they arrived from Kansas via the US Postal Service) and a caterpillar (he's eating lab food and is taking much longer to develop although he seems healthy and spunky enough) and I'm wanting to get them out and on their way to Mexico before the weather turns against them.
