Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/22/1998

Number: 1

Today my 7th and 8th grades classes were outside examining their
ecology plots along the Kickapoo Creek. The students began to
see a variety of butterflies, then came the cry of ,"Look at that
one! It's so big and pretty!" The Monarchs seemed like giants
compared to the other butterflies around. During the 45 minutes
outside, we counted a Monarch approximately every 1 to 2 minutes.
So far they have not been as abundant as they were last year. The
weather was partly cloudy, in the 60's after two days of easy
rain and cooler weather. We also found some dead Monarchs around. We are hoping to see more of the visitors as the winds change to the North and days are cooler. Now with the moisture hopefully we will see more of them.
