Monarch Adult Sighted

On Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, my second graders at Taft Elem. School ventured outside to let two of our 2-day-old monarchs, both female, go. It was a sunny and quite breezy morning with the temperature in the 50's. Both were eager to leave and without a moment's hesitation they flew off, one after the other, in a southeasterly direction for as far as we could see. The kids were so excited to watch them go and sounded like a bunch of Munchkins in the Land of Oz with their little voices crying "good-bye! good-bye!" We still have a male in our big butterfly net tunnel, but it's way too cold now to let him go so we'll observe him for as long as we can. One of our caterpillars didn't survive, and yet another seems to be "stuck" in the chrysalis stage. It's been 22 days now... All of these came from Kansas via the Postal Service and Journey South program as we were unable to find any of our own caterpillars this year.
