Tulips PLANTED

Date: 11/06/1998

Number: 1

Our Red Emperor tulips are planted!!! We planted 30 bulbs in two locations in our yard: our own experiment in micro-climates. We learned how to calibrate sticks to 7-inch lengths (depth sticks) and how to dig holes so that we could measure the depths accurately (place a straight stick across the hole on level ground and fit the depth stick underneath). These are well-fertilized bulbs, we use an organic fertilizer made from boned meal, alfalfa meal, kelp meal, blood meal, etc. Lucy loves to apply fertilizer. We will check this morning for squirrel damage, as dusk fell before we could install the chicken wire barrier.
In spite of our northern latitude, we live in a mild-winter climate. We expect that the tulips will be in bloom by mid-March.
