Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 11/08/1998

Number: 1

Sun 8 Nov 98: The big fall "push" of migrating coastal Monarchs arrived in the area. We netted 22 specimen by noon at the north end of the Lavaca Bay Causeway. We went back two hours later and netted 6 more in 8 minutes. We saw over 200 monarchs cut across the corner of the bay and head across the causeway to the south. We observed 60 with binoculars as they nectared on false goldenrod and determined that the group consisted of >90% males.
We weighed, measured, tagged, and released 26 Monarchs, only 2 were female. Only 2 were faded and tattered. Harlen and Altus http://www.homestead.com/vcs
