Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 11/17/1998

Number: 1

On November 17 at approximately 12:30P.M. about 40-50 baby Monarchs were sighted in the newly established butterfly garden of Statham Elementary School. The larva from these butterflies had been feeding on the fennel that is growing in the garden. A few pupa still attached to the butterfly bushes were also noted.
We were, however, not able to tag any butterflies since our school does not yet have a tagging kit. The third grade children in Mrs. Fleeman's room were ecstatic over the find.
The school butterfly garden was a two-year project in the planning and is still in an on-going developmental stage. Last May the entire student body of approximatly 400 students PreK-5th grade participated in a two-day planting activity.
