Signs of Fall

Date: 10/30/1998

Number: 1

Late in the evening of Oct 30,1998, I witnessed the largest migration of
robins I had ever seen. I am relative new to birdwatching, but on that date
I saw literally thousands fly at a compass bearing of about 75 degrees
east/north east. They were not in a tight cluster like starlings, but where
spread out all over the sky...some extremely high, others a couple of
hundred feet off the ground, while others were stopping briefly in trees and
on lawns. On Oct 31, I went back to the same spot and saw several, but not
the great numbers, flying in the same direction. Why east/ north easterly?
Were they avoiding a weather front? Oh, these robins were not
moseying...they were getting it.
