Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 01/23/1999

Number: 1

Here in north central Nebraska we have a robin wintering ground that I'm sure that now one even knows about. It is called the Niobrara River and the large creeks that feed it from the south-Pine Creek and Plum Creek.I have a friend who lives about 9 miles north of Ainsworth, on the south side of the Niobrara and on the east side of Plum creek. He says the is a 40 acre grove of red cedar trees about a mile south of his house and also located about a mile and a half east of Plum Creek. One
morning he COUNTED approximately 10,000 robins as they exited the grove and flew to Devil's gulch (the mought of Plum Creek). He knew he sees a lot of robins but he had no idea there were that many. It would appear that this in a "normal " wintering population but that it has not been reported because people here are not birders. My friend has retired and returned to the Sandhills. He has the time and money to watch birds as do I.
