Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/09/1999

Number: 1

On Feb. 1, my classes were in our schoolyard "sanctuary" and we observed a monarch newly emerged from its chrysalis with wings still bent, etc. Another monarch was in bad shape; about 1/4 of all 4 wings was missing. That same afternoon, the first monarch had fully extended wings and was mating with the injured one. The next day, the injured one was dead. We also have about a dozen larva of various sizes feeding on the few remaining milkweed leaves. Yesterday another adult was seen. Its wings were worn as though some scales were missing. The temperature the last 2 weeks has been in the high 70's and humid. It has been a very mild winter.
