Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/09/1999

Number: 1

We own and live on part of a four acre eucalyptus grove
in Los Osos, California. We have lived here for five years
and have seen some very high Monarch numbers. This is
not one of those years. Dr. Walt Sakai of Santa Monica City
College has been counting our grove in mid January since
1988 and normally sees 5 to 15,000. He was by a couple of
weeks ago and estimated that our overwintering population
this year to be 1500. From what I am gathering on the
University of Kansas Monarch List, the Western count is
somewhat low this year.
They normally begin to arrive during the last week of September
and usually thin out by the third week in February.
