Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 02/23/1999

Number: 1

We brought in 19 large Monarch larvae this weekend from the backyard A. curassavica. By Monday, 12 were in the chrysalis stage. We found newly deposited eggs on Monday and brought 5 in to check for fertility. The last hatch of 10 eggs had 3 Queen larvae in the group. The eggs brought in since mid-December have had a 93% hatching rate, mostly Monarchs until the 3 Queens this past week. We have been releasing about 12 Monarchs a week, raised in Port Lavaca from "wild eggs". There has been almost no Monarch activity in Victoria (30 miles inland) during February. Harlen and Altus
