Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 02/28/1999

Number: 1

Our neighbor, Bob Stark, has been tapping the neighborhood maple trees for a number of years. This year he put in 90 taps on February 28, 1999. On, Monday, March 1, the first full day of the run, he collected 100 gallons of sap. He says that is unusually high for the first day of the run. (Last year he tapped 89 trees on February 26 and collected 65 gallons of sap.) He predicts a "quick, early run which will drop off drastically toward the end of the third week of March. The buds will be early this year again." Looking outside, it's hard to believe. During the past 24 hours a winter storm dumped 10 inches of fresh snow! Our newly emerged tulips are buried!
