Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/01/1999

Number: 1

About the first of March I began to see tiny caterpillars. Eggs were everywhere on the skimpy milkweed plants. I saw maybe 4 eggs on the top of one leaf, which I had never seen before.
Soon the caterpillers were eating all of my milkweed plants down to a stump. I brought them in and put them each in a gallon glass jar and fed them that way. I now have 3 chrysalis and 3 on the way. I have had to buy milkweed to continuing feeding them.
I have brought in the eggs in the past and raised them that way
but now there are too many eggs. I have seen only one monarch
but there have probably been more. The weather has been 85° one day and then 65° the next day. We are having unseasonably warm weather for the last month and not much rain and the wild flowers are just beginning to bloom in the garden. The milkweed was damaged some from our winter but did not freeze down.
