Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/13/1999

Number: 1

I reported about all of the eggs that were laid by only a few monarchs. There were 4 or 5 eggs on a leaf and some were on the top of the leaf unlike last fall when the eggs were laid on the bottom of the leaf. After they hatched the caterpillars were everywhere. I brought about 9 inside and put one each in a gallon jar. About 4 didn't make it to chrysalis and one chrysalis looks like it is in trouble. There is a silky thread hanging down from the chrysalis and the chrysalis has dark spots on it. I have never had the monarchs to do this before. Perhaps it is a virus - I just don't know. Up until this year, I have never had a monarch caterpillar to die.
