Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/15/1999

Number: 1

Altus and I saw what MIGHT have been two migrating monarchs and not the "coastal" monarchs we have had all winter in Port Lavaca. We left school at 3:30 to drive the 30 miles from Victoria to PtL on US87. At 17 miles and again at 14 miles west of PtL on US87 a monarch passed in front of the van moving from south to north (hawk watching!). When we got home there was a faded female nectaring on the A.c. and a new batch of eggs. We had to bring in 26 4th-5th instar larvae because a mockingbird has started sampling them. Now we atart an hourly watch of the A.c. at school. Harlen and Altus http://www.homestead.com/vcs
