We have several nesting pairs of sandpipers in our front yard. They nest in the bare spots where there is no grass. They will fly away and make a great deal of noise if you get too close to the nest site. They use deception to keep predators from the nest. We also have at least three nesting pairs of redtailed hawks within a 1/4 mile, and at least three mating pairs of peregrine falcon. There are two other species of hawk in this area. The red-headed woodpeckers are nesting about 1/4 mile from us. Purple martins are starting to appear also. Our redwing blackbird population is approaching 100 mating pairs. They seem to be defining territories of about 1/8 mile in daimeter. I have also begun to see cardinals singing and defining their territories, but I have not yet seen any females.
