Last september1998 I embarked on this journey of gardening as an Art form with my students at the elementary school i teach at. As an Art teacher of k-5 students i wanted to get my classes out of the confines of the school walls have them begin to observe and record the natural world around us. I began looking at school yard habit programs and quite unexpectedly a monarch caterpillar made it's way into the art room and we began to record and observe this fascinateing creature truly up close. we created garden journals and also began to wonder about what would happen to this fascinating creature once the metamorphisis took place. Voila lets create a butterfly garden on schoolgrounds and try to lure these beautiful creatures back by planting all the neccesary things a butterly would need.
