Tulips EMERGED

Date: 03/22/1999

Number: 1

Students checked our tulip bed on Friday, March 19. Still no sign of the tulips emerging. On Monday, we checked again and found 9 spears poking their heads up from the ground. By Tuesday, there was a myriad of emerging tulips. The tallest spike was 5 cm high.
Students have begun to fill out their growth charts and will learn to record the growing degree days this year. Last year, tulips emerged on March 9th. Snow came late to our valley this year, and it has taken much longer for the valley floor to finally be free of the snow. Snow is still visible on the hilltops surrounding us. We will have many cool days still ahead of us.
