I have had
monarchs all winter. Usually it was just one or two for a few days. They
would lay eggs and another one would show up a couple of weeks later. I saw
monarchs as I saw monarchs in January : 9, 10, 26, 30. I released 3
monarchs in January. I have seen at least one monarch a week in February
and March.
The milkweed that I grow is A Curassavica. It was slightly damaged by
freezing weather, but is returning in full force. I have had an egg laying
monarch in the yard at least 10 out of the last 20 days. The milkweed is
covered with eggs and many of the tiny pillars are emerging. This, as far as
I can tell has been the work of only a couple of females. I have not seen
anything suggesting a migration. I think the abundance of monarchs that I
will have in the next few weeks will be do to the continuous resident
population. The pentas have continued to flower during the winter and are
covered with blooms. Though the lantana in my yard died
