Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/27/1999

Number: 1

The first monarch we saw in our area
and were able to identify as a monarch was a female who visited our
outdoor classroom to feed on some red verbena that bloomed through the
winter - some died back but a few sprigs that were more protected made it
the our very mild winter. It was a female and she stopped by on
Thursday, March 25. The weather that day was clear and warm. On
Saturday, March 27 we saw three more monarchs - all headed east. This past weekend we counted over 20 on Saturday and another 20 or so on Sunday (Easter). A front had passed with some stormy weather and they were out in what little sunshine we had - several were feeding on crimson clover. We are on the edge on one of the major migration routes and don't get large numbers, but we appreciate the ones we do get.
