Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/05/1999

Number: 1

Dear E. Howard,

I am reporting first on the Monarchs that I have seen at home which is about 5 miles form Bradenton (my school location).

I have seen adult monarchs all winter. However I have not seen
an adult for a few months until today. This seems to be a lone
Monarch which has been feeding on the milkweed which have been
planted in the garden. These milkweed have been planted for over a year but I have not seen any caterpillars on the leaves.

This is very different from the situation at school in Bradenton.
We seen two or three Monarchs at all times of the year. The milkweed garden generally has eggs in the spring, summer and fall.

We have to bring the caterpillars into the classroom to raise them into adult butterflies because of the other children collecting the caterpillars. The caterpillars usually end up being killed. Sad but true.

This is why we take any caterpillars that we seen and put them into our terrarium with the milkweed. We release them aft
