On April 3, 1999, I inspected milkweed in our area and found over 50 eggs between 4:30 and 6:00 in the evening, but sighted no Monarchs! I have had eggs in the classroom for 5 days now and they do not show signs of hatching. This should give an approximate date as to when they were laid. In prior years, 5 days has been the longest time in which I have had eggs before they hatched. My kindergarteners are becoming very excited waiting for "their" caterpillars to hatch.
We successfully raise and release 30 or more Monarchs each year and it has proven to be a wonderful experience for students, teachers, parents, and even grandparents. Everyone gets involved.
